Shin Splints

So you’ve increased exercising, or you are just walking longer, and then the pain hits – a stabbing pain on the front of your lower legs. These stings, running down the front side of your leg can be attributed to Shin Splints. Usually these splints happens when people overdo exercising.

A shin splint affects your two leg bones: the tibia and the fibula. Shin splint develops when the muscles attached to these bones become inflamed, causing intense pain.

Runners are prone to shin splint, where the repeated pounding on the foot results in pain in the shin region of the body. Shin splint is likely to develop in runners who use worn-out or improper running shoes. Shin splint can also develop in runners who have high arches and those who have naturally flat feet.

Prevention and remedies for shin splint:

To start with shin splint care encompasses the RICE principle: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

  • Go swimming. This is a very comforting low impact exercise for your legs.
  • Ice the affected area: Only advisable in the initial stage of shin splint.
  • Use wraps to compress affected area.

To prevent future shin splint occurrences, follow these tips:

  • Always warm up your muscles prior and after any exercise, make shure you stretch the calf muscles.
  • Wear prpoer supporting shoes that fit well.
  • Throw away old shoes that have lost their support.
  • Put shoe inserts in your shoes to minimize the strain on muscles and tendons on the front and sides of your lower leg.
  • Make the Tibialis Anterior muscle stronger by performing toe tapping or putting a weight on top of your feet and lift the weight with your feet repetitively.
