High Heels - How Shoe Selection Affects Foot Health

Foot health is very dependent on shoe selection. In fact, most foot problems are directly linked to ill fitting and unsupportive shoes. Flat, supportive shoes of adequate size are the best option. High heels are the worst option, but they are sometimes unavoidable. If you must wear high heels, you should at the very least wear high-heeled 3/4 insoles to avoid the following conditions:

  • Calluses - Calluses are the body's natural defense against pressure and friction. A callus is basically a thickened, toughened patch of skin. Callused skin takes up more room and only increases pressure felt while wearing shoes. They can also become painful and inflamed.
  • Corns - Corns are very similar to calluses except that they are most often found on the sides of the feet whereas calluses form on the bottom of the feet. They can also be found in between the toes and are caused by shoes that are too narrow in the toe.
  • Bunions - Bunions are identified by a large toe that is abnormally overextended inward toward the other toes. In extreme cases, bunions can cause the big toe to overlap the smaller toes. If left untreated, cysts and ulcers can form at the base of the toe on the outside of the knuckle. Again, bunions are caused by pressure and confinement in the toe of the shoe.
  • Morton's Neuroma - This condition consists of thickened nerve tissue in between the metatarsals, long bones of the foot. This condition is also most commonly caused by a confining shoe or narrow-toed shoe.

These conditions can occur as the result of wearing any type of shoe, but they are most common with high-heeled shoes. This is because all of the weight of the foot is pressed forward and into the toe. Insoles and inserts made especially for high heeled shoes can help take the pressure off.
