Different types of support hosiery offer varying ranges
of compression therapy
Conditions that affect the body's venous system are called venous
diseases. Venous disease results in insufficient blood flow from
the legs back to the heart, and as a result, blood pools in the
legs. Untreated, this blood pooling can result in swelling,
varicose veins, skin discoloration, sores and ulcers and, in some
cases, life-threatening blood clots.
If you suffer from venous disease, your physician may recommend
compression therapy. Compression therapy works by applying pressure
to leg veins, which improves blood flow. Support hosiery is often
used in compression therapy.
Support hosiery compression ranges
Support hosiery
is available in several compression and support ranges:
- Light support hosiery. This support range is designed to relieve
tired, achy legs and prevent varicose veins.
- Moderate support hosiery. This support range is used to prevent
and treat ankle swelling and varicose veins.
- Firm support hosiery. This surgical support range is used for
chronic foot and ankle swelling and vein conditions, including
varicose veins.
- Anti-embolism compression hosiery. This medical range is used
as an anti-embolism (blot clot) support stocking for pre- and
post-surgical patients.
Wearing support hosiery
Support hosiery used for compression therapy must fit correctly
to produce graduated compression. In most cases, users wear the
hosiery to the knee. Support
hosiery is made from a variety of fibers, including nylon and cotton.
Purchasing support hosiery
The type of support hosiery you need depends on your medical condition.
Before purchasing support hosiery, talk to your doctor about the
