New power mobility scooters allow users more comfort and maneuverability indoors and out

For those with disabilities, a mobility scooter can make all the difference. While early scooters were designed primarily for indoor use due to limited power and range, newer models offer far greater range and can even take on outdoor terrain.

Types of mobility scooters

A variety of mobility scooters can now be attained. Models include:

  • Three-wheeled mobility scooters. These power scooters offer the best maneuverability and are perfect for those living and/or working in tight spaces.
  • Four-wheeled mobility scooters. These scooters are designed more for stability and less for maneuverability, but they are great for outdoor use.
  • Fold-up mobility scooters. These scooters are designed for easy transfer from one location to another. Non-folding models usually require the use of a lift mechanism if you want to take them with you.

Purchasing a mobility scooter

What's the best scooter for you? Talk to your physician, who can recommend a scooter designed to suit your needs. Also, it should be noted that many manufacturers do not include the battery or batteries as part of the scooter; instead batteries are considered as options. Purchase the battery based on the recommendation of the manufacturer.

In addition, more manufacturers are now offering ergonomically designed scooter seats, lumbar supports and extra cushions. Armrest options also may be available.

Additional options include accessories, such as:

  • crutch and cane holders
  • oxygen carriers
  • baskets
  • headlights
  • tail lights
  • horns
  • and more.

Be sure to inquire about these important options before making a scooter purchase.
