An ankle sprain can be treated and protected from re-injury with
the use of an Ankle Sleeve
Have you ever sprained your ankle? If so, it's not easy to forget.
Sprains can be quite painful. Most ankle sprains occur when
the foot rolls inward. This inward motion stretches or tears the
ligaments that hold the ankle and foot bones together. Sprains can
result in ankle weakness and vulnerability for re-injury.
Recovering from sprain: R.I.C.E. and an ankle sleeve
To speed up your recovery from sprain, think R.I.C.E. and support:
- Rest. You should rest from all activities that cause further
pain or injury to the area.
- Ice. Apply ice to the injury for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 5 times
a day for the first 24 to 72 hours after the injury occurs.
- Compression. Use an elastic bandage, also called an ankle sleeve,
until swelling decreases.
- Elevate. Elevate the injured ankle above heart level.
You also will need to protect your sprain from re-injury. Fortunately,
the ankle sleeve you use for compression can do just that.
Using an ankle sleeve
The ankle's injured ligaments can take up to 16 weeks to heal.
An ankle brace helps
protect the ligaments during the recovery period. Ankle sleeves
also should be worn when returning to sport or low
impact exercise activities. Ankle sleeves should not replace
strengthening exercises, however. Rehabilitation is an important
part of recovery. Wearing an ankle sleeve will not make your ankle
weaker during recovery. In fact, the sleeve can help improve balance
and prevent re-injury.
Purchasing an ankle sleeve
Ankle sleeves are available for purchase over the counter. When
purchasing an ankle sleeve, look for one that fits your foot comfortably,
is easily washed and fits inside your shoes. Your doctor can recommend
the type of ankle sleeve to purchase. In some cases, your doctor
may recommend you wear an ankle brace instead of an ankle sleeve.
For this reason, if you suffer a sprain, be sure to see your doctor.
He or she will recommend the proper treatment and follow-up care.
