Using a Ball-of-Foot Cushion to Prevent “Shin Splints” and Other Kinds of Lower Leg Pain

Nearly everyone has suffered from some kind of exercise induced lower leg pain, which might commonly be called, “Shin Splints”. Shin splints generically describe any of several dozen lower leg injuries which can occur while running, walking, or even climbing stairs. In most cases a ball-of-foot cushion, whether built into your footwear or added to your shoes can prevent these sorts of injuries.

Ball-of-Foot Cushions can help with this big problem

According to Captain Christopher J. Couture, MD, and Kristine A. Karlson, MD, shin
splints account “for an estimated 10 percent to 20 percent of all injuries in runners and
up to 60 percent of all overuse injuries of the leg.” These injuries are most often caused
when undue stress is applied to the tibia or shin bone in the lower leg. Good ball-of-foot
cushions can help to absorb the shock of running or walking, preventing these sorts of
injuries. To see examples of ball-of-foot cushions, check out the product pages on the

Selecting Ball-of-Foot Cushions

When choosing ball-of-foot cushions, look for products which will act as shock
absorbers for your feet. These ball-of-foot cushions should be compact and firm not
overly soft, since a secondary cause of shin splints is the over extension of one’s toes.
The ball-of-foot cushion should keep the toes very stationary will still dampening the
effects of hard or missed steps. Again for good quality ball-of-foot cushions take a
