Flat Feet

While Flat Feet can cause ankle and foot pain in children, the condition is rarely a cause for concern

Flat feet is a condition in which the feet don't have a normal arch. The condition may affect one foot or both feet. Does your child have this condition?

How can you determine flat feet?

You can't determine a flat foot in infants. All babies' feet look flat because the arch is not yet well developed. By the time your child reaches age 3, however, the arch will have formed.

What is the cause of a flat foot?

Loose joint connections and fat between the foot bones are often the causes of flat feet. Standing or otherwise putting weight on the feet causes the arches to collapse, or fall. For this reason, flat feet are sometimes called fallen arches.

Does a flat foot cause pain?

Flat feet can cause foot or ankle pain, so if your child complains of discomfort, be sure to visit your healthcare professional. A thorough examination is important, because sometimes hip or knee problems may be the actual cause of the foot pain, not flat feet. Your child may require X-rays, but usually the physician can determine the cause of the foot pain with a physical examination.

Can flat feet be treated?

Flat feet are rarely cause for concern. If you child experiences foot or ankle pain, your healthcare professional may recommend a shoe insert for increased comfort.

With or without an arch, your child's feet will continue to grow and develop. Flat feet should not limit your child from his or her favourite physical activities. Foot pain due to overuse will subside with rest.

Surgery is not helpful for most patients with flat feet. Only in rare cases, such as when painful flat feet are caused by infused foot bones, is surgery recommended.
