New research shows Ankle Brace is preferred over taping
to avoid ankle injuries in athletes
Should athletes use ankle tape or an ankle brace to protect
their ankles from injury? New research says ankle braces work best.
The research on ankle braces
Both ankle tape and ankle braces can help protect the ankle joint
and prevent sprains in athletes. But, according to a new study,
ankle braces, which provide more constant support, may be the better
option.
Vrije University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as reported in
the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, reviewed eight studies
on ankle-sprain prevention. The researchers found that both ankle
taping and ankle bracing reduced athletes' sprain risk and also
resulted in less severe sprains.
However, the researchers found, ankle braces may offer better support.
One study reviewed by the researchers, a six-year study of 300 football
players, showed ankle braces to be twice as effective as ankle taping
in preventing sprains. The reason: Researchers suggest that ankle
tape may loosen during play, lessening support and increasing the
risk for injuries. Ankle braces, however, provide continuous and
sturdy support.
Are ankle braces better than high-topped shoes?
The researchers also found that ankle braces were more effective
in preventing injury than ankle-supporting, high-topped shoes. In
fact, though newly purchased high-topped shoes may provide some
support, as the shoes are used and the material breaks in, ankle
support lessens.
Do ankle braces help previously injured athletes?
It is unknown whether athletes with previous ankle injuries benefit
from ankle bracing as much as healthy athletes do. Studies continue
on that topic.
Are ankle braces cost efficient?
According to the researchers, ankle braces provide the cheapest
and most effective protection.
