Excessive Pronation of the foot can lead to long-term debilitative
injuries
So what exactly is Pronation? Pronation of the foot is common;
actually it is necessary and perfectly natural. But it is excessive
pronation that concerns physicians.
Lets' begin with a definition of what pronation exactly is:
When an individual steps, the foot naturally rotates outwards or
pronates. This process allows the foot to better absorb the shock
associated with stepping. Normal pronation is healthy and natural,
but when the foot rotates outward at an excessive angle, this pronation
places an unnecessary strain on the inner stabilizing ligament and
joints of the foot.
Over pronation is also commonly referred to as flat feet, or a
biological condition wherein the base o the feet are flat, thus
not allowing it to role at the natural and healthy angle. Over pronation
occurs in individuals who have very flexible flat feet. The condition
develops as the framework of the foot begins to collapse as a result
of over-exertion, adding stress to the other parts of the foot.
This condition of over-pronation can potentially lead to other foot
complications including severe discomfort and the inflammation of
the planter fascia.
To prevent over pronation of the feet for those individuals that
are naturally pre-disposed to the condition it is recommended that
orthotics be inserted into the shoes to help further stabilize the
feet. These devices are designed to help prevent pronation. Additionally
it is advised for individuals pre-disposed to the condition that
all footwear be examined by a trained professional. The professional
can in turn determine whether it is a proper fit for the particular
condition.
