How To Select the Appropriate Cane is Not Rocket Science: Go With The Cane That Feels Right

Selecting the proper cane is not and should not be the most vexing question of the day. You should not lose sleep over picking the right cane, and the right cane doesn't always have to be the prettiest; most of the time a good cane is not.

A cane is at its essence a stick used by the bearer for stability and balance control. Uses for a cane vary from individual to individual but may need to be used in a variety of circumstances. So how do you know if you need a cane?

First of all, you need a cane when the doctor tells you that you do. A cane becomes necessary when you can't continue to balance yourself on your own, or when walking without the cane is labored. But what cane is right for you?

Most major cities have full service pharmacies where professionals are available to assist you with the proper cane selection. And the most important fact to remember when selecting the cane is finding a cane that fits your gait. There are multiple types of cane, most of which are made from wood or metal; but, these countless styles are typically divided into three major styles.

It usually makes no difference whether you buy a wood cane, a metal cane, or even one of the new plastic polymer canes. Size is the primary concern. Standard canes are those with rounded handles and resemble the red and white candy canes of youthful memory. Straight handled canes are best for those people with weak hands, those people who are unable to grip the traditional round handled cane. Broad based canes are those that have three or four short legs on the bottom and offer the most support. These canes are best suited for the individual with the weakest balance, who as a result are in need of the most support.

Proper cane selection is not rocket science and need not be the most vexing question of the day. Most major cities have full service pharmacies and or medical supply stores where trained personnel are available to assist you with the proper selection of a good fitting cane.
