The riskiness of- and the cures for Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are not a pleasant experience. It is often a painful
condition that leaves many people (especially women) feeling self-conscious
of their appearance. Varicose veins occur when the valves in veins
loose their effectiveness. Instead of blood traveling freely from
these veins to your heart, the valves become lazy and allow blood
passing through to pool and remain in the area, causing the vein
to enlarge, bulge, become twisted and show beneath the skins surface.
These varicose veins are usually found in the legs and feet.
Who is at risk for Varicose Veins?
Those who are at the biggest risk for experiencing varicose veins
are women. The condition is most predominant in women who have it
in their family history, are elderly (even middle aged), and who
have been pregnant many times. This does not mean, however, that
men do not experience varicose veins, only that it is less common
among their gender. Also people who need to stand longer periods
of time for their profession are at risk. As a preventive measure
these people should use firm elastic support socks.
Varicose Veins is extremely common
Varicose veins is an extremely common condition. In fact, half
of the U.S. population experiences effects of this venous disease.
It is estimated that 1 out of 2 people age 50 and over will contract
varicose veins, and about 55% of these suffers will be women. Of
course, not everyone who has this condition, experiences the full
symptoms. Most of the cases are mild, and the varicose veins can
not even be seen and only act up when the person has been on their
feet for a long period of time. On the other hand, those who suffer
an extreme case, experience pain and a burning sensation in the
effected area, and their varicose veins will pop up, looking dark,
almost like a bruise, and can always be seen under the surface of
their skin. There really isn't any medical treatment available
for this condition, and only those who have serious case will be
operated on. This means that only you can help your varicose veins
by resting, elevating your infected leg(s) or feet avoid standing
still for longer periods and use firm elastic support socks.
