Knee Problems are common among young and old and are caused
by many different things
There are basically two kinds of knee problems: mechanical and
inflammatory.
- Mechanical knee problems are those in which the knee will not
move and inflammatory knee problems are those that involve a swelling
and inflammation of the knee. Some mechanical knee problems are
the result of injury, such as a direct blow or sudden movements
that strain the knee beyond its normal range of movement. Other
knee problems, such as osteoarthritis in the knee, result from
wear and tear on its parts.
- Inflammatory knee problems are the result of inflammation such
as that which occurs with rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic
diseases.
One of the most common knee problems is arthritis of the knee.
This knee problem is most likely caused by a wearing away of the
joints of the knee and they become inflamed. Common symptoms of
this type of knee problem are pain, swelling, and a decrease in
knee motion.
Another symptom of knee problems is stiffness in the morning that
gradually decreases with movement. Knee problems are most often
treated with pain reducing medications such as Aspirin and Tylenol
and doing exercises to restore movement that may be lost as a result
of the knee problems.
Some other knee problems may be caused by injuries to the cartilage
of the knee. These knee problems are usually treated with exercise,
but in severe cases surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged
cartilage.
